Monday Design Wall etc.

I have added, and am linking to, my Design Wall Monday post over at my new blog Webs of Threads where I now place all things involving thread, whatever the form.

Since I set this blog up a couple years ago, it appears Blogger has changed a few things, and I can't figure out how to add that link/button/whatcha-ma-call-it thang called Followers/Join This Site/Members at WoT.  I posted about that over there too, so hopefully, some one can give me some insight.

It is currently very dry again here in the dry land.  My hands look like alligator skin - I have the great blessing of having naturally dry skin, but dislike having to use an abundance of creams.  It seems to be worsening as I age, so I'll have to succumb to those moisterizers.  I just need to find unscented ones or ones whose scent is at least acceptable to my odor fragrance processing center.  It's so dry, even my eyes feel like sandpaper!  I suppose that's one of the reasons I don't like this time of year in this part of the country.  If I were in the wet land, I'd likely enjoy it more, at least I'd like to think so.

I do like this product.   In the past when I purchased it the tube looked different, so I don't know if they reformulated it, or if it's just a different package, or if there's more than one variety.  The previous formula didn't feel quite as slippery as this one after I rub it in, and was unscented.  This one feels slippery on my palms longer and I usually use a tissue to wipe my palms, and it also has a light scent, along the lines of maybe lilac or honeysuckle - at least it's a natural-smelling scent.  Some fragrances remind me of nothing I've ever smelled naturally and I don't like those at all.

On Saturday, I enjoyed my visit with my friend Panda.  She is a true blessing in my life as a friend and for some conversational reasons I won't go into here, and we had a great time of talking and sharing.  There were some tears, but there were also laughs and smiles.  She's going to be kept busy with some family things as the holidays approach, which hopefully, will ease the pain of these "firsts" without her husband, so we likely won't have an opportunity to get together again until after the first of the year.  Losing a beloved spouse is never easy, no matter how many days or years pass.

Design Wall Monday, 11 November 2013

On my design wall today are elements for my November NewFO.  I have all the 9-Patch units done and have only begun working on the side elements that create the star points; the one you see is the only set of four that's done.  I was side-tracked over the weekend!

How was I side-tracked?  By genealogy.  You see, ArkivDigital, a Swedish genealogy site was offering complete viewing of their records ... FREE for the weekend !!!  And I like free, especially at this time in our life.  And who wouldn't like being able to search for document images in Sweden?  I was able to find, and save to file and print, about a half-inch tall stack of documents, mostly church records for births and what amounts to a form of census called "Household Records".  All of which gave me birth dates I didn't have and even names of siblings of my direct ancestors.  Some of these were from the very early 1800's.  All that to say, I didn't make much quilting progress.

Design Wall Monday, 4 November 2013

I'm still working on Gathered Over Time.  I have finished 45 of the 99 9-patch units.

When I press my 9-Ps, I begin on the back so that I can open the seams and spin them.  This gives me a much flatter block, and makes for less bulk.

Travel iron

For my birthday during the summer, my aunt gifted me with one of those portable ironing/cutting pads that folds so you can take it along to quilt classes.  It is a joy to have it next to my sewing station. I've had this little travel iron since Marty and I married in 1996 but rarely used it.  Well it occurred to me that it would make the perfect iron for the pressing board.  It also steams! And I'm a steamer.  That little water chamber holds maybe two tablespoons of water, and I sure do have to refill it frequently.  It's tip is perfectly pointy for getting at those seams. The iron was a wedding gift to us and as you can see, it is branded for JCPenney.  It doesn't have auto shut off so I really have to pay attention to make sure I shut it off when I leave the room.  The kitties are in here frequently and I'm afraid they'll burn their little noses or knock it over.

Raven was having quite the time of disturbing my work this morning.  She took a liking to that pencil.  She managed to bat it under the printer, I retrieved it, and then she batted it to the floor and quite smugly took off and left it there losing interest at that point.

Design Wall Monday - October 28, 2013

The worst part about this time of year is that it rolls by way too fast.  We're already back at Monday, which seems like it was just here!

On my design wall this Monday, as a follow-up to my post on the 25th (Friday) are a few blocks now assembled. I've just randomly scattered them onto the design wall, even overlapping for now.  They will finish at 4.5" so there will be a whole bunch more...and how will they be laid out and assembled?  Well, that will be shown toward the end of the week for the October NewFO link up at Cat Patches.

I don't know about you and yours, but my scrap bins are really beginning to look skimpy.  They are certainly devoid of neutrals.  At some point I'll have to dig into fat quarters and yardage to get enough for a couple of additional projects I'm prepping for and then when those run out, I may have to beg for funds to buy more ;)

One problem with continuously working with just your existing scrap bins is that you see the same fabrics over and over and over, and I'm tiring of some of them.  I may have to see what I have in my stash for a few future quilts of 'new' fabrics to mix this scrap pile up a bit.

Design Wall Monday

Have you seen all the projects on design walls posted over at Judy's Patchwork Times?  If not, you'd better head over there.  There's a whole bunch of fun stuff in those linked up posts :)

Right on target, at 11:00 p.m. PDT last night, I sewed the last stitches on the borders of Grandma's Scrap Bag.

I don't know what I was thinking.  Actually I do, I was thinking 5 1/2" cuts for the borders, which is what the pattern calls for.  Hah! Want to know what I cut the very first one at?  5 1/4"!!  Now why on earth did I do that?  I don't know, I don't know. And when you cut 5 1/4", you can't add that 1/4" back on, especially when you've set aside just the amount of fabric for the borders!  So what did I do?  I cut them all at 5 1/4"  - seriously, 1/4" is not going to make a difference on this quilt.  No problemo.

And even though it came out ok, that old reminder rings loudly in my ears "Measure twice, cut once" and always be attentive.

I look at this flimsy and it makes my heart light.  It's a happy quilt, refreshingly crisp and cheery.

Design Wall Monday

My day is a typical Monday with taking Nick to school, then a stop at Trader Joe's to get some fresh produce, bread and pastas and some housework, meals and whatever pops up.  

The skies are pretty as there are some clouds, and the winds of the last few days have subsided.  Our forecast includes a 30-40% chance of rain for Wed & Thurs...I'll believe it when I see it as it often doesn't materialize.  Lip balm is still my best friend, and an absolute must in these dry conditions.

I worked in nearly 4 1/2 hours of sewing time yesterday and have all 42 of the basic blocks done for Grandma's Scrap Bag.  I haven't yet put the actual design wall up, so again I'm taping these blocks to the wall where the design wall material will be (thankfully no longer in the dining room), so technically they are on the design wall.  Next comes the pieced sashing blocks/strips which I'll do some work on today as I'm planning on shirking some of my household chores.  I'm still feeling really saddened for my friend Panda because of her loss.  We chatted briefly through a chatline, and she's 'ok' and has her family with her and they're taking care of all the arrangements.  I pray for her frequently throughout the day.

Design Wall Monday

In spite of my grumpy feelings this week, or maybe because of them, I set back to work on the Tumbler project.  I'd been getting somewhat bored with it.  It is very repetitive even if the fabrics themselves are greatly variant.  I put in about 13.5 hours on it over the last four days.  The individual rows are now done with the exception of determining the ends, which I may remove one tumbler of each alternating row only to re-add it to the opposite end of the other alternating rows for a zig-zag edge.  Make sense?  Sure, ok.  

As the design wall is not yet up in the in process, re-vamped craft room, I have once again taped a sampling of the rows as they currently are to my dining room wall.  The sampling is of the first 11 rows I grabbed out of the 40+ rows I made, which is more than I actually need.  I'll worry about the excess later.  Even with the rather boring process of putting this together, it's still exciting to see a quilt begin to emerge.  With scrappy quilts, it's also nice to see fabrics that I've used in other projects, as well as fabrics that maybe came from a friend or were just small pieces I picked up from a quilt shop or show outing.

Design Wall Monday

I hope everyone's having an enjoyable (U.S.) holiday weekend, and staying safe.  Frankly, I've never really understood Labor Day.  I did go over and read about it on Wikipedia.  As my son would say, "Meh".  For the most part, at this stage of the game, it seems to be not much of a celebration other than having become a marker of sorts for the end of summer, though that doesn't officially end until later in the month.  And it tends to mark the beginning of a new school year, though even that is changing in many places.  Our son's school has always started the third week of August and locally, the public schools even started a week earlier than that this year.  I suppose there are some sales abounding out there, though I haven't watched enough network TV to see if there have been ads for sales, and since I'm watching pennies far more closely these days, that's just as well.  And, while Marty may be off from 'laboring', I still have my chores so I've 'labored' plenty this weekend, while he's done his thing, which hasn't done much to better my mood.  Well, even that's a choice, so I'll get over it.

On to the purpose of this post!! It's Design Wall Monday over at Patchwork Times where we all link up to show what we're working on, and if I don't hurry up, Monday will be done and over with.

On my 'design wall TABLE' (yeah, no progress on that quilt room since I last mentioned it) is the same project I've been working on for my August NewFO, which is the beginnings of my Tumbler quilt.

I now have about half of the twosies sewn into sets of foursies, next will be eightsies, and then, well, you get the idea.  Are those even words?

Now, since I have no pattern to follow, I see I will have to do something to fix the ends of each row, when I get that far.  The tumblers need to alternate and so I need an opposing single tumbler to add to each alternating row, and then I need to determine how to handle what will become a slight zigzag when I do that.  As I put this together, I'm just reaching in and grabbing the next set and only tossing it back if the set includes the same fabric as what I'll be connecting it to, or if their isn't much contrast between the ones next to each other.  And I already see that one set on the bottom, has two that don't give much contrast.  Maybe I'll take off that tan basket-weave and use it as an end on the other side, hmmmm.
Well, back to my labors, I need to finish cleaning up the kitchen from having made dinner.

Design Wall Monday

My design wall this week has held the Tessellating Ts project I started in July at quilt camp.  

I decided to not do any shuffling around with the placements and delved right in to sew the rows together.  

Completion of the piecing and rows of Tessellating Ts.  It still requires borders, but they will wait until another time.  Flame was checking to make sure all my seams matched up.

These are the bonus half-square triangle sets that were gleaned from the Ts project.  When trimmed, these will make 1 3/4" squares.  I've already pressed them open and begun the trimming process.  I've not yet decided what I'll do with them all, but eventually, it will be something.

Here I have the T quilt folded and packed up to await borders.  I also bundled the remaining pieces I'd cut into full row sets, grouping them together in the needed light/dark sets, banded & marked them, and though not in the photo, added a sheet notating how many I have, and how many I still need to cut for a second T quilt.  This project has been well-liked on my 'real me' social media page among friends and family.  I have not posted it yet to my blogger i.d. social media page.

There's a whole lot of activity from the week shown over on Judy's Patchwork Times where some very busy bees have already posted their projects, so don't forget to check them out.

I've already started my next project, but haven't taken any photos yet.  I'm really feeling a bit out of sorts with not being able to use my craft room yet.  There's been no further progress as Marty's waiting on hearing back from others who might be able to remedy his attempt at the knockdown texturing of the ceiling which didn't turn out as well as we'd hoped.  With his lay off this past week, I've suggested we even leave it as is until, and if, such time as we need/decide to sell because we still have three other rooms and a few closets with the old ceiling crud that also needs to be removed and sprayed with new knockdown and all of that is easier when there's little to nothing in the rooms and right now, we're wondering if a clutter intervention could be in our future because the other rooms are a mess.  OK, that IS a bit of an exaggeration, but there's a lot to be decluttered to really make things look good.  Well, enough of that, head over to Judy's and check out the links.

Design Wall Monday

I have not been very energetic today.  And since I wasn't, I spent the better part of the day thus far, de-cluttering and organizing my email account.  You read right, my email account.  My main email account I've had for about 13 years and even with all good intentions to delete as I go, it's amazing how much stuff stays in the account.  I'm sure there's still way too much stuff, but I've now transferred most of the 'saved' emails into separate folders as needed which will make it that much easier to go through and glean the info I truly want to save, most of which pertains to genealogy records and family happenings.

Now having done that, I just remembered it's Design Wall Monday and I haven't even looked at a single blog today!  So I'll do my post and then browse for awhile.

On my design wall, er, the dining room wall which is subbing for the design wall in its absence, is exactly what I posted about yesterday, or was it Saturday?  Told ya', not very energetic today so I'm not going to look back a day or two.  Anyway, it's this:

Tesselating Ts, McCall's Quick Quilts November 2005

I did finish the last row and have taped it to the wall too but it isn't in this photo, and I'm thinking I'll leave the rows that I'd already sewn together as they are after all.  It's a scrappy quilt and that's how scrappy quilts are, scrappy, not 'designed'.  The pattern calls for a 2" (finished) border, so will need to pick the fabric for that once I sew the rows together.  Maybe I'll have reached that point by next Monday.  Or I'll have worked on something else, hah, maybe even nothing at all.  Oh, and I need to decide on a NewFO for August while I'm at it.  I certainly saw plenty of possibilities in my new books and magazines.

Design Wall Monday

I may be getting to this late in the day but it is still Monday, at least here in the West :)

On my wall today is the string quilt I'm working on; the latest picture:

I'm liking what I'm seeing, and this is only 12 of the blocks. I have more but didn't have room for them on the wall with the spools still on there.  This may or may not be the final layout, and I haven't decided if I want to simply sew the blocks together or use a sashing in between, and if I go with the sashing, I haven't yet thought about whether to go scrappy in the same color family, or use a single fabric.  I have a dark blue 'ugly' floral fabric I could use, but haven't given it the road test yet.  If you haven't already checked in over at Patchwork Times, go spend some time there looking at the beauties others are posting.

In other news, we were all up at 4:00 a.m. this morning so that Nick could be out the door with Marty by 5:00 in order to be at the airport by 6:00 for the 8:00 a.m. flight time.  The group made it to D.C. without incident at the expected time and Nick called to let me know shortly after they landed.  He then called back later in the evening and chatted for awhile.  The got caught in a pretty good rain at the Washington Memorial and he said he got quite wet.  Their dinner was at a seafood buffet and he ate three plates of food: the first was crab legs, 2nd was popcorn shrimp and 3rd was mahi-mahi...he didn't mention a single vegetable, and he doesn't eat salad, but he did say he had ice cream.  They'll be awakened at 6:30 a.m. for another very full day of events, and I expect that by the time he gets home at 7:00 p.m. Saturday night, he's going to be quite the tired young man as every day is absolutely go-go-go!  What a time to remember though, and I hope he does remember in the future and look back at this special opportunity with great joy.  I continue to pray for him and the entire group.

Design Wall Monday

There are actually two quilts in this picture. The plan was a single quilt, but I guess I got carried away making the blocks and ended up with enough for two.  The differences between the two are only that I made one so that the 'bricks' are laid horizontally and the other one vertically.  Then I decided they needed a skinny border before adding the outer border.  One will have a blue, about 1" finished, border, the other will have a red one - and I need to choose from the two reds shown.  The outer border will probably be about 3", maybe less, of muslin.

These are on my Get It Done list, so I should be able to accomplish the borders.

Design Wall Monday

It's getting late in the day, and I'm still puttering around on the internet.  We hit 97 today on this side of town and 102 on the other side of town - I am NOT ready for summer weather, ok, at least I know where to find my shorts and tees.

Back to business, as I posted a day or two ago, I have worked on this all week.

My way of easy 'mitering'.  The pattern did not call for mitering, but I wanted the directional print to be mitered, so this is how I did it.

Interesting how the gold star tends to look more like an 'X' or plus-sign on point and the white star (see below) doesn't so much.

I have loved this white tone-on-tone for years.  I used it in a windmill block quilt since the geometric reminded me of windmill blades. That little bit of blue with the wavy line to the right of the bottom sashing piece, that's what I used in the sashing and border of the first quilt I made like this (#029).

And actually ON my design wall?  Well,, that would be these little blocks ... scrappy spools!  They will finish at 3" and by the time I have actually said 'enough are enough', I will probably have enough for several quilts.  But that's still a long way off in the future.  I'm doing these as leaders/enders.

Design Wall Monday

I love starting new projects, and this is my NewFO started, barely, in April.  I've been making a lot of progress on it.  

There are 36 blocks to make, and they all need the last two logs.  Then there's the sashing and cornerstone stars.  At this rate, I just might have it in time for at least the 4th of July as it is a 'patriotic quilt'; I might even have it done for Memorial Day, but that's not likely as I want to finish at least one of my oldest quilts from back in the 2006 era before May is over.

The Hurrier I Go, The Behinder I Get

Does that sound like a familiar refrain?  Frankly though, I don't know that I ever do much hurrying, I pretty much just poke along doing what I do.

So let's see, I'm behind on Sunday Stash Report.  I'll skip it this week since there's nothing in nor anything out. 

I'm behind on Design Wall Monday.  It's completely empty as I haven't worked on any project, so I'll skip that post this week too.

I'm behind on Get It Done 2013 for May, though technically today IS the first of May, so I have till midnight right? I'll add that as a separate post.

And last, I think, and certainly not least, I'm behind on my posting about my NewFO for April and linking up at Cat Patches.  I'm trying to think what I actually did in April.  It seems I was constantly busy with fabric, and I think what was mostly done was cutting up scraps into future projects aside from one finish :).  But I DID give one of those sets of pre-cuts a project number, which that and being kitted was as far as I got on it.  So, that qualifies it as a NewFO and here is April's NewFO project:  a 'duplication' of project #029 shown in my gallery

My new project is #039 and the colors will be pretty similar as most of the logs are cut from the same scraps as the first one.  An entirely different gold is being used for the centers and stars, and a different blue is being used for the sashing and borders.  Can I just say I wish I had a lot more of the original blue, I really liked it for this project.  The photo doesn't really show it very well either.

Today I went to my quilting student's home for her lesson.  She is such a very creative young woman.  For her second quilt she found something online she liked as a basic idea and created her own blocks for a quilt for her young son.  The quilt has a space theme using primarily reds & blues, mostly starry and space fabric along with some plaids - she learned all about those plaid brushed cotton type fabrics that shift a lot.  For the back, she decided to piece it and in piecing it - completely her own design, ended up with a dilemma as she realized that she's going to lose some of the parts she pieced.  Her solution, after we discussed a number of options and possibilities, is to make two quilts since her son has two twin beds in his room, and just use a solid/solid-read fabric for the backs of each.  

I also showed her the basics today of straight line, stitch-in-the-ditch, and free-motion quilting, the latter of which I'm not proficient at and consider myself as a novice and she realizes that's going to take awhile to learn.  She has a little bit of another dilemma with then doing all straight lines, as four of the blocks in the original quilt are large squares featuring a cartoonish space ship - different in each block, and she doesn't want to quilt through the space ships.  The blocks need to have some manner of quilting in them.  She's considering hand-quilting around the ships and a few other objects within the block but she'll ask another person to show her how to do that as I've not hand-quilted, though I could probably teach her some basics from having seen it demonstrated frequently and via internet & book resources.  Time ran out, so we'll see where we are next week.  She already has fabric and a pattern for a third (or fourth given that one turned into two) quilt.  She's having a ball, and I am really enjoying working with her - we inspire each other and I am truly blessed to also grow in friendship with her and the children.  I knew her husband from a creation outings group I was involved in back in the '90s ... oooh, that sounds sooo long ago.

Design Wall Monday and other Activities

CHORES:  It's Monday and up until fixing my lunch, which consisted of only putting my leftover Panda Express meal from last night's dinner into a bowl and then into the microwave, I've done nothing but chores today.  Gathering, sorting, washing/drying, folding, hanging and putting away laundry - 4 loads so far!, picking a chicken carcass for home made chicken soup, putting a beef roast into the crock pot for dinner - either tonight's or tomorrow's, as yet undecided.  I've cleaned the cats' litter box, reviewed my pantry inventory, and of course took Nick to school before any of that. 

NEWS: As I sat eating my lunch, I turned the TV on and of course, learned about the bombing at the Boston Marathon.  Yet another sad day for our country.  My prayers go to the Lord on behalf of those suffering directly from this incident. 

GENEALOGY:  I've mostly taken a break from all things quilty the last couple of days and have instead worked on some genealogy - I am paying for that Ancestry.com membership, so NEED to be using it more than I have been lately.  I once was invited to attend a focus group, and for doing so, received a full 1-year membership for free, but sadly that was a year I didn't get as much time in as I should have on the branches that would have benefitted, especially for the databases included in their world membership level.  

The branch I'm currently working on is my great-great-grandmother through my mother's father's side of the family.  Her maiden name was Lind.  I uncovered a whole lot of info - this computer age makes it so relatively easy to find out information even on younger, living individuals.  Sometimes it's almost scary knowing what can be found about people (now you know why I prefer to keep my true name hidden here on the blog where one never knows who may be viewing).   I uncovered a 3rd cousin-once removed, who lives here in my same town but on the other side.  Who knows whether we may have crossed paths somewhere over the last ump-teen years of my living here. 

QUILTY:  I'm thinking I really need to get this quilt finished.

Not the best shot, but shows from the back how I started with straight lines the length of the quilt and then started following the zig-zags.  AND, the backing doesn't look very smooth in some spots - they WERE/ARE pinned, maybe not closely enough

My friend Lois had given me 'tons' of fabric from her years of making her own clothing - yardage and scraps - back in September 2006, and as a thank you to her, I started this quilt using many of those fabrics just two weeks later.  I worked on it off and on in 2006/2007, sandwiched it in 2008, and started the quilting in January of 2009.  At the time, I wasn't pleased with how I was quilting it, so stopped and put it away.  I'm embarrassed at how long ago that was and yet amazed at how much time has slipped away - doesn't give me much hope in getting all the quilts I WANT to do DONE in my lifetime!  I think at this point, I need to just press on and get it done so she can have and enjoy it!  Head over to Patchwork Times for more Design Wall reports.

Design Wall Monday

Monday comes around all too soon, and March is Marching right along at a very quick tempo!  This is actually the last Monday of March, can you believe it?

I now have all the boys and girls paper pieced and can work on the last three stars for the corners.  I have to say, I was getting real tired of boys and girls.  The stars go much faster.  Then I can figure out how to do that center section.  Tina Curran, the class instructor, gave instruction on it towards the last hour of the day, and well, I wasn't paying a whole lot of attention, but I have her instructions sheets and the instructions on the fusible web, and am quite able and capable of learning from those.  I don't think I'll have any problems with it, at least I hope not!

Design Wall Monday

As I wrote about yesterday, I took a class at a nearby quilt show.  The three blocks I made in the class are on my design wall, and I will be doing some more work on this project later today.  For now, here's a shot of the three blocks:

DESIGN WALL

Physically on my design wall is this quilt.  I recently bought the gold fabric for the inner border, but in putting it up on the design wall with the quilt center and the outer border, I'm not happy with it, so will be looking for a new gold, something that reads a little darker and flatter - not so bright - and more like the solid (mottled) gold squares in the quilt.  The background of that fabric is that way, but the gold 'paint' is brighter and I just don't like how it looks.  There will be more to write about this quilt at a later date :)  (Linking to Patchwork Times)

My Easy Street piecing is finally done and in essence, I considered it still on the design wall until it was, which was late yesterday.  I tried to get a shot of it outside in natural light, but there wasn't a really good place, i.e. clean place, to lay it down, so right on the dead leaf-covered lawn it went.  I also took a pic of it indoors draped over kitchen chairs.  I've yet to decide if I'll add borders or not.  I like it this way, but I also like what I've seen where others have added borders.

Easy Street will probably go into the UFO pile until I decide whether to add borders, or to quilt it as is, and if the latter, I need to wait until I get some other projects quilted to free up my basting pins! I'm not going to buy any more of them!
